News from the Farm | September 1, 2025

Another amazing summer has almost come to an end. We’ve been too busy picking tomatoes and flowers to grace your dinner tables to even turn the pages on our calendars. But, the farmers of Full Belly Farm generally do not count time day to day. Instead, we see the changing seasons by the events that have become the constant reminder that another year has passed. The fall is when we farmers celebrate the beautiful harvest of another year with the Hoes Down Harvest Festival. It is a precious time, full of total exhaustion, and excitement, as we  celebrate and share the beauty of rural life, and share our farm with others. This year marks the 34th annual Hoes Down Harvest Festival – we hope you will join us. In case you need convincing, we have created a list of the top ten reasons to come to the Hoes Down Harvest Festival at Full Belly Farm:

1. The Location – If you and your family have yet to visit Full Belly Farm and the Capay Valley, this is a perfect time to do so! You’ll get to see the animals and crops that we watch over each year and there will be walking tours of the entire farm throughout the day. Don’t miss the Flower U-Pick!

2. The Music – We have pulled out all the stops for the 34th annual Hoes Down and are excited to feature The Black Sheep Brass Band, Nat Lefkoff, Raices, JB Barton & Co as well as many other terrific acts from Northern California. We are thrilled to host the The Home Pie String Band from Pie Ranch for a rousing square dance set. We hope you will join us for a few do-se-dos!

3. The Workshops – This year we have some exciting new workshops with something for everyone! Learn about brewing beer with heirloom grains from Hanabi Lager Co, watch (and taste) a live fire cooking demonstration with a Michelin starred chef Seth Stowaway, get the perfect compost recipe from soil health expert Margaret Lloyd, leave with your own organic mushroom grow kit from KM Mushrooms, search for native plants and animals on the farm with local ecologists, and much more!

4. The Food — You’ll never go hungry with our stellar lineup of organic food options. Here are just a few of the menu items we have for this year:

  • Falafel, smokey baba ganoush, creamy hummus at Mediterranean Cafe
  • Slow roasted River Dog Farm pork, roasted veggies and zesty slaw over Lundberg rice at Big Bowl
  • A slice of veggie or sausage pizza from Faria Bakery
  • Fat Face seasonal popsicles and Rocko’s Ice Cream Tacos

Every dish is made with the highest quality ingredients, thanks to our amazing food donors, including Cream Co. Meats, Rumiano Cheese, Lundberg Family Farms, Alexandre Family Farms, Frog Hollow Farm, Good Earth Natural Foods, and MORE!

5. Sunday Open Farm Day – Want to continue the farm fun on your way home? You’re in luck! On Sunday, October 5, farms of all shapes and sizes throughout the Capay Valley will be opening their doors for festivalgoers to explore and learn how to stone grind almond butter, distill lavender, see an electric olive harvester in action, and more!

6. Camping in the Walnut Orchard – There’s nothing more magical than falling asleep in our majestic 60-year-old walnut orchard and enjoying a piping hot breakfast and coffee on Sunday morning. It’s an incredible sight you don’t want to miss – farmers and festival attendees waking up after a joyful night  and sharing stories and breakfast together. Do some yoga as the sun rises!

7. Farmers Market, Craft Vendors and Silent Auction – Supporting local farms and artisans is at the heart of our mission. Purchase beautiful local organic produce from Pasture 42 and Good Humus and high quality organic wool products from Full Circle Wool. Screen print a poster with Odd Petals printing or score a unique dress made from upcycled fabric at Ragged Thistle. Don’t forget about the silent auction, stocked with so many good items and experiences from our favorite farms, crafters, and restaurants.

8. Children’s Area and Farm Games – Voted one of the top agricultural farm visits for kids – the festival is FULL of hands-on activities for kids ages 1 to 99! Grind grain, paint a pot, make a flower crown, get lost in the sudan grass maze, and learn about natural fibers. Then test your skills at farm games: watermelon eating contests, egg tosses, and the olive pit spitting contests are just a few of the farm fun activities that await you.

9. The Cause – Every single penny raised during the Hoes Down goes to the Ecological Farming Association  and local community organizations, such as the Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF), the local Future Farmers of America (FFA) and 4-H clubs, scholarships for high school ag students, and more. These organizations shape our regional and state agricultural scene of today and the future. By attending the Hoes Down, you are supporting these important causes – especially important in these times!

10. Volunteers – Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Hoes Down Harvest Festival. They park cars, set up stages, chop onions, find lost kids; the list of what they do is endless and the festival wouldn’t go on without them. Many of these hardy folks have come for well over a decade because they LOVE the volunteer energy and commitment to making the festival happen. Volunteering is also a great way to attend the festival on a budget. Sign up for a shift here. There are even shifts on Friday – you can be finished with your volunteering commitments before the Festival officially starts. Camping Friday night is an option for Friday volunteers too.

If this list of ten excellent reasons wasn’t enough, the last thing to note is the true magic of Hoes Down. For each person, the exact reason will differ. For us, it’s the seemingly impossible task of converting a working farm into a festival and then back to a farm, all in one weekend. And the positive influx of energy, positivity, and joy that the community of attendees, volunteers and vendors bring to this farm. Countless people have told us how important the Hoes Down is for them and their families; there’s no denying that this is a unique, and not to be missed event. We hope you’re able to experience it for yourself. Tickets and more information are available on the Hoes Down website here.

News from the Farm | July 28, 2025

Last week’s cooler weather had many of us remarking that it felt more like fall than what we’d expect for peak summer days. While it’s still only July, we know that October will be here before we know it, with crisp mornings and the first winter squash and leafy greens. Besides the change in seasons and flavors, October marks another very significant event on the farm – the Hoes Down Harvest Festival! YES! We are very excited to share that the 34th annual Hoes Down Harvest Festival will take place here at Full Belly Farm on Saturday, October 4th, complete with dancing, workshops, and general merrymaking!

So…what is this Hoes Down? It’s a celebration of sustainable agriculture and rural living, and a chance for folks to come to the farm to learn, grow, and connect with the land and the farming community here in the Capay Valley. Equally important, it’s an amazing on-farm fundraiser for both EcoFarm (the Ecological Farming Association) and many other local organizations working to support agriculture and rural communities.

You may be wondering, what exactly happens at the Hoes Down Harvest Festival. There’s so much to do and see, including:

The 33rd Hoes Down happened this past weekend – a mix of farm fun, friends, family, and food. A good time was had by all 2,000ish folks who braved the heat to spend time here this weekend. Somehow, the farm is back in action on Monday morning with a relatively short list of remaining clean up tasks.

The fact that we’re a working farm the Friday and Monday surrounding this big event hides what a huge undertaking the Hoes Down is. It requires months of planning, countless little details to figure out, and a lot of hands and hard work in the days before and days after to pull it off.

News from the Farm | October 9, 2023

Well folks, we did it. The 32nd Annual Hoes Down Harvest Festival has come and gone and the farm is almost back to normal. We transformed a working farm into a weekend festival for over 2000 people, we fed, taught, and entertained them, and then we cleaned up and turned it back into a working farm so that we could resume our normal Monday farm activities. That “we” is a big group. SO many people and SO much work goes into this really special event, even if it was Hoes Down in a “slowed down” format.

So we have many many thanks you’s to all of those who made is possible. This week we want to take a moment to express our sincere, deep gratitude for all of those who helped make the Hoes Down Festival the success that it was.  [Read more…]

We’re rapidly approaching the end of another Full Belly summer. Melons were picked, flowers were bunched and dried, tomatoes were packed, and our bellies were filled with the delicious summer bounty. We generally do not count time in days; instead we observe the changing seasons by the way the mornings feel (the cooler the better!), the flavors of the fruit, and the events that take place in our valley. The fall is a time when we Full Belly farmers make time to celebrate the whirlwind that is our summer and share the beauty of farm life with our community. It is a precious time, full of total exhaustion and excitement as we transform our working farm into a full-on Festival.

This year marks the 32nd Annual Hoes Down Harvest Festival. We hope you will join us. Since announcing this year’s Hoes Down, we have heard from people who have been coming for decades and for whom this festival is very important to their families, and from people who have never come but want to deepen their relationship with our Farm. We have been preparing in earnest to welcome newcomers and returnees. In case you need extra convincing, we have created a list of the Top Ten Reasons to come to the Hoes Down Harvest Festival at Full Belly Farm:  [Read more…]

The Weekend-That-Would-Have-Been

Right about this time in past years, our readers would probably have been rolling their eyes at yet another message from Full Belly Farm about our Hoes Down Harvest Festival.  This year, not a peep, right?

There have been 30 Hoes Down Harvest Festivals at Full Belly Farm over the years, but there will not be one this year.  They are usually held on the first weekend in October, so we’re calling October 6th and 7th the  “would-have-been” weekend.

There are multiple reasons why we are taking a break, all summed up in the collective commitment of the distinguished Hoes Down Steering Committee to re-envision this wonderful event.  To quite a number of our friends who have told us that the Hoes Down is their favorite day of the year, and that their kids are going on hunger strikes, we answer that we are excited to bring back an even more magical, educational and meaningful Festival in future, but we must warn you that it may be different!  [Read more…]

Last week Judith wrote a brief thanks for all who participated in this year’s Hoes Down Harvest festival. I would like to start this week’s Beet with a bit more if you can bear with me.  After a week of picking up the last of the remnants of the festival and putting them all away, there is a lingering sweetness for all of us here about the whole experience.  For those of you who attended, perhaps you have your own best moment, but there are a few for me that I would like to share.

The Hayfort….

We have been doing this structure for nearly all 30 years of the festival. Every year the builders request more straw bales- this year nearly 600 bales of straw were arranged safely to provide tunnels, climbing and scrambling, pirate lookouts, interior dark places and tight squeezes- designed to be too small for big folks- in fact parents aren’t allowed inside- it is a place to be brave and fearless- always remarkable for me how we as a species like to climb to the top, how we are explorers at heart and how our children have such stout hearts to navigate dark passages. It’s hard to know quite what to say about the experience of having 5,500 people sweep through the farm over the weekend to set up a Festival and then take it right back down. The Hoes Down Harvest Festival was on Saturday 10/7.  It left us with many memories to share. This is truly a very special community event.  We had over 600 volunteers doing their shifts as best they could, coming to the Hoes Down to do their part to help.  There are families, many of whom are CSA members, that have been coming to the Festival for decades, so that it has become a family tradition for them and from our point of view, the Hoes Down wouldn’t be the same without them.  We want to thank all of our CSA members who came and helped out in so many big and little ways.  We truly appreciate all of you.

These kids made friends with a very special scarecrow.

We got a lot of dishes very dirty, and ran out of cleaning up steam on Saturday night.

Top Ten Reasons to Join Us at the 30th Annual Hoes Down Harvest Festival:

Once again that time has come, when the air starts cooling down, the sun stays hidden for just a bit longer, and farmers feel some weight lift off their shoulders as the Summer season comes to an end. Fall is coming, a time when pumpkin patches start popping up, farms stay dark just a few minutes longer and the season of tomatoes and summer squash comes to an end. As people search out their Halloween decorations, and farmers pull out their mud boots, Full Belly gets ready for the Hoes Down Harvest Festival.

This celebration is a chance to get out to the country and experience some good old-fashioned family fun. Although there are countless reason to come to the Hoes Down, I have done my best to pick the top 10!

#10: The Vendors! The farmers’ market features fresh fruits and veggies, the crafts area offers great crafty gifts from our artists and herbalists, and you can try your luck at our Silent Auction. [Read more…]

Several score Hoes Down volunteers arrived at Full Belly Farm on Sunday 9/25, helping us prepare for October 1st. Festival weather is predicted to be mild, but our volunteers cheerfully worked through high heat to build the hay fort,  spread wood chips, clean the volunteer kitchen, make scarecrows, put up tents, clean supplies and all kinds of other jobs. The Hoes Down Festival is special for many reasons, but the outpouring of volunteer energy makes it wonderful and unique. Come celebrate sustainable agriculture, say goodbye to summer crops and welcome in the fall! [Read more…]

Top Ten Reasons to Come to the Hoes Down

Summer for most farms in this area is the busiest time. Produce is growing rapidly and the summer bounty is thick. Everyone is rushing around to complete his or her work from sunup to sundown. I love everything that the summer brings from tomatoes and melons to finally getting to swim in Cache Creek. However the fall is my favorite time of year. There is delicious acorn squash and chard, but also everything slows down for just a moment.  The Hoes Down is our last big hurrah to say goodbye to summer and hello to the fall. Here are ten reasons why you should join us in ushering in the new season:

Contra Dancing One of the most popular events each year at the Hoes Down is the amazing Contra Dance. People of all ages from the old to the young join hands on the dance floor to be lead through the dances. We have been so lucky to have Driving with Fergus and caller Erik Hoffman to lead our dance every year. Even more exciting we have moved Contra Dancing to the LocaLore stage this year to allow more space for each of you.  [Read more…]

Hoes Down Festival Fun!

Our Hoes Down has come and gone — but it left some magical memories.  Adventures and fun filled the day. One of the most memorable moments will go down in the history books. It occurred when the heavens opened up with a downpour that sent a few folks running for cover while the farmers jumped for joy. Our sound man ripped out the electrical connections and moved his crew on-stage to clear off his equipment and get it out of the rain.  The band on stage was The Dixie Giants.  When they lost their sound system, they gazed at the heavens and took a deep breath. Stepping off the stage, they were engulfed by the crowd where they continued their Dixie magic, leading the crowd on a short meander. Finding a tent that they could fit under, they continued to play their amazing music to a crowd of ecstatic, hollering fans.  Within 5 minutes, the rain had stopped and with a diminished sound system the next band was soon able to play, but not before the Dixie Giants finished their set with inspiring acoustic music that set the crowd afire. Lightning had been lighting up the sky for some time, and it continued for hours. In the campsite no one took their eyes off it and everyone lined up in their lawn chairs to enjoy the beautiful light show, something that few native Californians have ever seen before in their home state. Another summer has come and gone at Full Belly Farm. Baby goats were born, tomatoes were packed, and our bellies were filled with delicious summer bounty. The farmers from Full Belly generally do not count time in ‘day-to-day’ – instead, we observe the changing seasons by the way the mornings feel (the cooler the better!), the flavors of the fruit, and the events that take place in our valley. The fall is a time when the Full Belly farmers celebrate the whirlwind that is our summertime. It is a precious time, full of total exhaustion and excitement, as we mark our calendars and create no fewer than fifty “to-do” lists to prepare for the wonderful festival that reminds us all to share the beauty of farm life. This year marks the 28th annual Hoes Down Harvest Festival. We hope you will join us. In case you need extra convincing, we have created a list of the Top Ten Reasons to come to the Hoes Down Harvest Festival at Full Belly Farm:

#10 – The Location – If you and your family have yet to visit Full Belly Farm, this is a perfect time to do so! News From the Farm | August 17, 2015

You are all invited to the 28th annual Hoes Down Harvest Festival taking place on the weekend of October 3rd and 4th at Full Belly Farm. Make a corn husk doll, paint a gourd, tour the farm, make ice cream, or try your hand in any step of the process from sheep to shawl. Dozens of hands-on workshops are offered on topics like organic fruit trees, grass-fed beef production, cow milking, herbs and flowers, small farm equipment and more! All of these activities are included in the price of admission. We have our music lineup chosen, from the contra dance led by Driving with Fergus to Wolfthump, the Dixie Giants and The Humidors.

The Hoes Down is hosted by dozens of Capay Valley Farms and community organizations. The real muscle of the day are hundreds of volunteers who become a part of the Hoes Down by giving their time at one of the food booths, in the children’s area, in the parking lot — or in many other ways.  Volunteer shifts are 3 or 4 hours and we appreciate all of our volunteers by offering them free entry and camping. We are ready to sign you up for your shift — You can contact the Hoes Down volunteer coordinator through a portal on the Hoes Down web site volunteer page — we’ll get right back to you.

All proceeds from the Hoes Down are donated back to community organizations that participated in the weekend. For more information: http://www.hoesdown.org.
