Hoes Down Harvest Festival!

Another summer has come and gone. Baby goats were born, tomatoes were packed and pages on the calendars turned. The farmers on Full Belly Farm generally do not count time day to day. Instead, we see the changing seasons by the events that have become the constant reminder that another year has passed. The fall is a time when the Full Belly farmers celebrate the beautiful harvest of another year. It is a precious time, full of total exhaustion, and excitement, as we mark our calendars and create no fewer than fifty to- do lists as we plan for the celebration that reminds us all to share the beauty of rural life, and lets us share our farm with others.  This year marks the 27th annual Hoes Down Harvest Festival – we hope you will join us. In case you need convincing, we have created a list of the top ten reasons to come to the Hoes Down Harvest Festival at Full Belly Farm:

#10 – The Location – If you and your family have yet to visit Full Belly Farm, this is a perfect time to do so! Not only are there walking tours of the entire farm throughout the day, but you will also get to see the animals and crops that we watch over each year. The Hoes Down Harvest Festival was on October 5th and 6th, a weekend chock full of family farm fun.  The Hay Fort was one of the busiest and happiest locations. We have an experienced Hay Fort safety crew (the green shirts in this photo) that make sure kid safety and fun are the top priority.

Kick Your Heels Up and Put Your Hoes Down!

Every year it seems as though the calendar pages turn a little faster, the days speed by a bit, well, speedier, and just as we, the farmers, are about to collapse from summer exhaustion a glorious thing happens. The nights get cooler. The days get shorter. The last melons and tomatoes and hot-weather crops come out of the field. Fall is upon us. Sigh. Fall is so dreamy.

For most farms, this change in season signals a slow down – a time to drink bigger cups of decaf coffee and reflect on the summer. A time to begin work on all of the projects that were pushed aside while tomatoes and basil and eggplant and peppers needed harvesting. A time to wake up later and go to sleep earlier. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it…), Full Belly Farm is not like most farms. The folks here at Full Belly are still in a frenzy, gearing up for the 26th annual Hoes Down Harvest Festival, happening the first weekend in October.  [Read more…]

For those of you who were able to attend our October 6th Hoes Down Harvest Festival, thank you for making the day an incredible experience and wonderfully successful event. Nearly 6,000 folks celebrated the closing of a long summer season with dance, great food, information sharing, farm tours, hands on activities and a night of camping in the farm orchards. We talked about the day briefly in last week’s Beet, but the magnitude of the effort deserves a bit more attention. We spent the last week cleaning up: Taking down the hay fort and stacking all of the straw and hay. Packing away signs, stoves, canopies, flying fox gear, kitchen equipment and scarecrows in a side bay of the old hay barn where they will gather dust until next September. Hauling off trash and recycling and returning beer kegs so that the farm can resume the rhythm of this fall season. Now the farm has returned to nearly normal, ready for work. [Read more…]
