The news from Full Belly Farm is: RAIN. Between Thursday night and Monday morning, we got about 7 inches of rain, with 6 inches coming between Saturday afternoon and Sunday night. That is a lot of rain to receive all at once and is more than we received last winter and spring. Right now (Monday morning) there’s some water in the creek, muddy roads and lots of puddles everywhere, but most of the standing water in the fields and orchards has already started to sink it. Still, it’ll be a while before we can get tractors out into the fields; we don’t want to get them stuck or compact our soil. There was a lot of frenetic work on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday last week to finish the walnut harvest, sow cover crops, transplant onions, flowers and almost 20,000 anemone and ranunculus corms, and everything else that needed to happen before it rained and it seemed like that was time well spent!

We also have an update from Full Belly’s resident artist, Anna Brait. Anna makes beautiful art, often inspired by the plants, people, and life here at the farm. She paints with oil and makes drypoint intaglio prints, hand-painted with watercolor.

Anna has an upcoming show! Her work will be on display in Gallery 1891, upstairs from Guinda Corner Store on select weekends in November. The Gallery 1891 event can be accessed using the north door entrance at 7530 CA-16, Guinda, CA 95637. For some local history, the Corner Store has been in business since 1891 and this space was originally the Guinda Public Hall, a spot for local dances!
The exhibition will be on view the following times:
Sunday November 7th: 11am -5pm
Saturday, November 13th: 5 -8pm
Sunday, November 14th: noon -4pm
Saturday, November 20: noon -4pm
There is an opening reception on Saturday, November 13th from 5pm to 8pm with light refreshments.
