July Photo Round Up!

photo 2

We woke up this morning to cloudy skies, cool weather, and a few drops of precious rain. It wasn’t enough to do any damage to our summer crops, but enough to remind us of what it smells like after a rain and keep the dust down for a few hours. These tomatoes are just flowering. Can you even believe how many there are?!

We brought a few pounds of sunflower seeds home from Italy and on a lark decided to plant them. They are now about 12 feet tall (literally!). I guess Italian sunflowers seeds like our California soil quite a lot! We are going to try to press the seeds from these flowers for oil later in the year.

photo 3A reminder that summer does not, in fact, last forever. These beauties were brought into our office last week. I cannot believe that in the midst of all of the tomatoes, melons, peaches, grapes, eggplant, peppers and summer squash that we are already seeing the beginnings of the end of this very busy season.

Our sweet calf, born on the 4th of July, has been named! After much consideration and deliberation, we have landed on the name Yankee Doodle Dandy, or “Dude” for short. He is certainly living up to his firecrackerred color – he is full of spunk and spirit! Thank you so much for all of your great suggestions – our next litter of pigs is due soon, so keep your naming ideas fresh!

I hope you enjoy your boxes this week.
